Gail Smith plays Amy Beach: A Musical Sesquicentennial Celebration
On Sunday, September 3, we will celebrate the sesquicentennial of one of America’s foremost women composers: Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (September 5, 1867 – December 27, 1944). At the 10:00 Eucharist the summer choir will sing her anthem “Let this mind be in you” for soprano and bass soloists, choir and organ. At 12:30 that day, Gail Smith, celebrated pianist and America’s leading authority on Beach’s music, will give a 1-hour piano recital in St. Andrew’s Hall (choir room on the Parish House fourth floor). Mrs. Beach is the only woman among the 70 male composers to be honored with a granite stone on Boston’s Hatch Shell. She was married by Phillips Brooks himself to Dr. H.H.A. Beach in Trinity Church in 1885. Dr. Beach was Brooks’ personal physician. Please join us for this historic occasion!
