Recent Sunday Morning Music
Here are three short recordings of the music from recent Sundays.
First, we have 'Draw the Circle Wide' by Mark Miller (b. 1967), from Sun., Feb. 11.
An organist-composer classically trained at Yale and Julliard, Mark Miller (b 1967) has become a galvanizing figure in church music today. Five close relatives have been African American clergy, and an ardent Methodist lay leader himself, he fundamentally believes that “everyone is a Child of God—music, social justice, and the beloved community are inextricably tied.” Teaching at Drew University and the Yale School of Music, he also performs and leads worship across the United States and abroad. For both of our Music Directors, Colin Lynch and Jerrick Cavagnaro, Mark Miller has been a teacher and friend.
Second, we have 'Jubilate Deo' by William Walton (1902-1983), also from Sun., Feb. 11.
William Walton (1902-1983) continued the flourishing of English music at the turn of the century—Stanford, Elgar, Vaughan Williams—becoming a near contemporary of Howells and Britten. Trained at Christ Church, Oxford, first as chorister and then undergraduate, he composed music for orchestra, chorus, opera, and film. “Jubilate Deo,” a setting of Psalm 100 for double chorus and organ, is brief but rich in its joyously contrasting harmonies and dynamics.
And, third, we have 'Like as the Hart' by Herbert Howells (1892-1983) from Sun., Feb. 18. We were pleased to welcome Christ Church Winnetka joining in with Trinity's choir and choristers for that day's 10 am service!
Herbert Howells (1892–1983) was influenced by Tudor composers Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, as well as the flourishing of late Victorians, such as Stanford, Parry, and Vaughan Williams. “Like as the Hart Desireth the Waterbrooks,” a setting of Psalm 42, is among his most lyrical and beloved anthems. Its prayerful phrases evoke the soul’s yearning to be present before God.
