Epiphany Yoga Practice at Trinity
The forecast of snow hung heavy in the air, but those gathered at Trinity last Saturday morning were thinking about the sun: Sun Salutations, to be specific. The Reverend Rita Powell, Associate Rector for Liturgy and a yoga instructor with an emphasis on therapeutic yoga practices, led 25 or so participants of all ages, experience, and ability levels in a two-hour workshop. During Epiphany, she explained, we celebrate and look for the sudden illumination that comes when we understand God’s presence in the world. And a yoga practice that wakes up our bodies can help us train to recognize these illuminations when they come to us. With this in mind, Rita led participants through two hours of stretching, movement, and balance centered around the Sun Salutation, a simple series of poses that wakes up the solar plexus. Throughout Epiphany, participants were invited to train for a series of 108 Sun Salutations, to be attempted (in blocks of 24) when the group gathers together again on Saturday, February 25, from 9 to 11 am.
