Dear Trinity,
On Sunday at the 10am and 5pm services*, Trinity Church will mark its annual observance of All Souls with a new musical setting of the Requiem by Matthew Coleridge. This liturgy offers a holy space for us to remember loved ones who have gone before us.
Written in memory of the Coleridge’s father, the Requiem infuses a sense of loss and remembrance while offering a transcendent message of solace, peace, and hope. His Requiem (2016) is a deeply moving and lyrical setting of the Latin Mass for the dead. The work is scored for choir, solo cello, orchestra, and organ. Blending influences from composers like Fauré, Rutter, and Whitacre with his own contemporary voice, Coleridge creates music that is both eloquent and profound with serene beauty, emotional clarity, and rich harmonic textures. The cello plays a central role, offering a wordless, expressive counterpoint to the choral writing.
Now performed widely by choirs across the UK and beyond, the Requiem has become a beloved modern addition to the choral canon—offering performers and audiences alike a powerful space for reflection, mourning, and musical beauty.
The choir is looking forward to sharing this new work with the parish and leading this important moment in our worship life. We hope you will come be with us this Sunday.
Peace,
Colin Lynch
Director of Music
*Our 8 am service remains a spoken service, including the reading of the Necrology
Bring in Photos for Chapel of Remembrance
You are invited to bring in photos of those you love, but see no longer, to place in the Chapel in the Undercroft this Sun., Oct. 26 (All Souls’ Sunday) through Sun., Nov. 2 (All Saints’ Sunday). Please drop off your item at the Front Desk in the Parish House (at the 206 Clarendon Street entrance) until 9 am on All Souls’ Day; after that time you can bring them directly to the Chapel through 12 noon.
Even if you have not lost someone recently, we invite you to come and take a look at the Chapel and add your prayers for those who have. All ages are welcome to visit and look around!
The Chapel will be lit and open again on Sunday, Nov. 2, All Saints’ Day, when you can reclaim your photo. Please, do not leave any irreplaceable items, and identify them with name and contact information (there is a basket with all helpful materials for this at the Front Desk!). In addition, we will have materials for adding names to the Chapel in lieu of photos. Please be in touch with Kit, klonergan@trinitychurchboston.org, with any questions.
Submit Names for Necrology
Our services will resemble a funeral mass, and will include a spoken Necrology at each service (8 am, 10 am, and 5 pm), naming those who have died in the past year, and those who have died and who are close to the hearts of our parishioners. We invite you to add the names of loved ones you would like us to include in the Necrology this year by using this form.
Please know that if you submitted a name of a deceased loved one for the Sunday Intercessions since December of 2024, they are already included. Please be in touch with Kit, klonergan@trinitychurchboston.org, with any questions.
