Sacred Ground Info Session
Mon, Sept. 8, 6:30 pm, on Zoom
I thought I knew a lot about the history of racism in the US but I was surprised at how much more there was to learn. The curriculum is plentiful and rich in content, but there is also the freedom to determine how much you are able to engage—you can skim the surface of everything or do a deep dive. I met folks I wouldn’t have ordinarily and heard and learned from people with different backgrounds and perspectives. I left the program more committed than ever to working with others to tackle systemic racism.

Sacred Ground is a film-and readings- based dialogue series on race; grounded in faith; and created by the Episcopal Church to focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories. Sacred Ground Dialogue Circles will be offered this coming fall; join for an info session on Mon., Sept. 8, hosted by Trinity parishioners who have previously participated. The series is open to all parishioners and provides a broad historical and religious national context for our own personal growth and for our life as a parish.
For years I have been trying to understand the racism that seems to me to be endemic in the US. Studying, meeting, and praying with Episcopalians from my own community has helped me to identify and attempt to process discrimination that I hardly knew existed-in a safe place.

As a white man I doubt I would be able to proceed with anti-racism training in a secular context because my guilt, anger, and sense of powerlessness to effect meaningful change would overwhelm my desire to continue. Sacred Ground has fostered my desire to know Jesus better and to find answers to the question: what can I do to combat racism? Striving to follow Jesus’s teachings is a perfect personal daily action (an antidote even) to all the years of living within a society of white superiority and privilege.
