SUMMARY:Forum Series: Generous Tables\, Gracious Spaces
DESCRIPTION:The story of Epiphany encompasses all the ramifications of a newborn savior whose presence impacted the spaces around him: from the Magi travelling to see the Holy Family in a humble dwelling; the flight to Egypt from Bethlehem under threat of death; the welcome back to Joseph’s hometown of Nazareth. The intersection of who Jesus was\, and where he was located\, is part of Epiphany’s liturgical invitation to recognize God’s presence in what we might imagine are ordinary spaces. Our Forums this season (1/11\, 1/18\, 1/25\, 2/1 and 2/8) will intertwine our program year (Grateful Hearts\, Gracious Lives) theme with the nuance of Epiphany’s transformation of space: what spaces are ready to welcome God and God’s people?\n\n\n\n\n\nJanuary 11: What Can a Body do? Encountering the Built World from a Different Angle \nOn Sun.\, Jan. 11\, we welcome guest speaker Sara Hendren\, an artist\, design researcher\, writer\, and professor at Northeastern University. Her book What Can A Body Do? How We Meet the Built World explores the ways our many bodies meet our technologies\, designed products\, and built environments — in ways that liberate and constrain our lives. \n\n \n\nJanuary 18: Who is Invited? Welcoming Bodies\, Movement\, and Joy \nWhen we think of spaces which allow for connection\, joy\, and celebration; who feels as though they are invited and safe in them? On Sun.\, Jan. 18\, join members of Boston’s Gays for Patsy (you may have seen them line dance through the Pride Parade!) to hear about the work they have done in fostering spaces to encourage friendship\, movement\, and dance. And yes\, we will be learning a few line dances with them! \n\n \n\nFebruary 1 & 8: What Does It Mean to Be Gracious with Grace? \nWith the Rev. Brandon Ashcraft\, Priest for Outreach \nBeginning with Jesus’ first sign at the wedding in Cana\, these two Forums will explore how God’s abundant generosity continues to shape the Church’s sacramental life. \nThe February 1 Forum will consider the Episcopal Church’s historic 2015 decision to extend the sacramental rite of marriage to same-sex couples. We’ll examine how sustained engagement with Scripture and theological reflection led the Church to recognize and bless the grace already at work in the lives and covenants of same-sex couples. \nOn February 8\, we will turn to the Eucharist\, exploring the Church’s long tradition of baptismal preparation for Communion\, the emergence of “open table” practices\, and the theological questions raised by Communion without Baptism. Together\, we will consider how divine hospitality\, sacramental formation\, and ecclesial identity belong in a creative tension at the Lord’s Table. \n\n\nPostponed to Mar. 1: What Does it Mean for Trinity to Be a ‘Gracious Space’? with the Rev. Morgan S. Allen\, Rector \n\nTrinity’s location “in the City of Boston” affords us the privilege and responsibility of welcoming the world into our historic worship home. Some who visit have come to patronize a New England landmark; some have come to nourish a spiritual longing; and some have come in search of a pew or a bathroom to find a moment of rest. Join the Rector as we consider: What dispositions does our congregation’s unique identity ask us to cultivate and support in ourselves and in one another? What are the stakes of our engagement with the world? What basic practices could we adopt to be an ever more gracious space?
