Surge, illuminare - Richard Webster (b. 1952)

Surge, illuminare, Jerusalem,

quia venit lumen tuum,

et gloria Domini super te orta est.

Quia ecce tenebrae operient terram

et caligo populos.

Super te autem orietur Dominus

et gloria eius in te videbitur.

Arise, shine, Jerusalem;

for your light has come,

and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

For darkness shall cover the earth,

and thick darkness the peoples;

but the Lord will arise upon you,

and his glory will appear over you.

Text: Isaiah 60:1–2

One thing have I desired of the Lord - Herbert Howells (1892-1983)

One thing have I desired of the Lord, which I will require

even that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

to behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and to visit his temple.

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his tabernacle

yea, in the secret place of his dwelling shall he hide me,

and set me up upon a rock of stone.

And now shall he lift up mine head

above mine enemies round about me.

Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation with great gladness

I will sing, and speak praises unto the Lord.

Text: Psalm 27 vv. 4–7

Surge, illuminare - William Byrd (1540-1623)

Dear Lord and Father - C. H. H. Parry (1848-1918)

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,

Forgive our foolish ways!

Reclothe us in our rightful mind,

In purer lives Thy service find,

In deeper reverence, praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard

Beside the Syrian sea

The gracious calling of the Lord,

Let us, like them, without a word

Rise up and follow Thee.

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,

Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress,

And let our ordered lives confess

The beauty of Thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire

Thy coolness and Thy balm;

Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;

Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,

O still, small voice of calm.

Text: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
